We have been talking, reading books and watching videos about positive affirmation and how our thoughts can sometimes stand in our way of learning.  As an activity, we wrote down all of our "I Cant's" and buried them in a graveyard. Then we each wrote a positive affirmation to help us "rise up" and reach our full potential.

Hello Addison Families,

Just a quick note about homework for this years fifth and sixth graders. All students should be reading for a minimum of 30 minutes each night. This can include reading to a sibling, reading a newspaper, a magazine, and/or fiction or non-fiction books.

Beginning in the next few weeks, students will be bringing home Homework Folders on Monday night. They will have an article for reading comprehension practice, as well as a math facts practice sheet. The math sheet should be a timed 1 minute practice. The idea is that over time the facts will become more automatic so that as we begin moving to higher level math, students will be fluent. The reading comprehension article is an independent read with follow-up questions. Both assignments will be brought back to school on Friday morning and handed in at that time.

As part of our current science unit, we have learned about the energy cycle of an ecosystem. These diagrams demonstrate the energy flow and the relationship between the producers, consumers and decomposers in the ecosystem.

I have had a few inquiries regarding homework this year. My thoughts on homework are that generally it is busy work that serves no educational purpose. Students cannot complete homework if they do not have an understanding of the concept. Likewise, if a student has an understanding of a concept, they do not need to complete homework. Research studies on the benefits of homework in academic achievement often contradict one another, and do not show results in favor of either side of the issue. There is also no correlation between homework and test scores. (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development 2004) 

All ACS sixth grade students should be doing at least 30 minutes of reading every night. If the wish is to foster time management, students can set an amount of time to work on Mrs. Trudo's blog to review math games. Any assignments that are not completed in a timely manner will become homework when necessary.

As a conclusion to our cell biology and organ system unit, we are creating models of a plant and animal cell using clay.

We have also diagramed our organ systems to display in the hall.

Please help your 6th grader remember all that they need for a successful school day. This includes lunch, snack, appropriate outdoor clothing for the season, shoes/sneakers and musical instrument if they participate in lessons. My hope is to alleviate the calls home and allow you to have an uninterrupted day. Thank you!

As we wrap up our unit on government and the election, each student will be writing a persuasive piece about the candidate they think will make the strongest president, based on our research of their platform stance on key issues.  We will also be holding a mock election here at ACS with the 4th, 5th and 6th grades on Election Day.
